Chapter

Twenty-Four

Igasped. “Dana?”

He nodded. “She crafted the sword and sheath and presented them to Arcturus. The sword could be set aflame and was made of the finest Fae steel, which is enchanted to be stronger than earth steel but contains no iron. However, because of its magical nature, it would shear through any earthly weapon. The sheath was bespelled to heal any wounds.”

We nodded. I think we’d all heard that before in the tales of Arthur. My mind was still reeling, thinking about Dana as the Lady of the Lake. I guess all those medieval paintings of her as a beautiful woman were propaganda. Her terrifying visage wouldn’t make as good of a story. However, she was powerful and talented.

“The rest, although glorified and fanciful, was more or less true, Arcturus set out to find heroes for his new kingdom and set up armies to achieve his goal. After he’d made good headway, I took a step back and let him lead the life he’d built for himself. I went back to Faerie for a while, where your grandfather employed me. But since time is odd between the places and time wasn’t one of my elements, when I returned, Arthur had aged, and I was the same as I’ve always been.

“That romantic nonsense with Lancelot and Guinevere was fully fictional. Arcturus was too busy to marry. He wasn’t the kind of king to sit on a throne and enjoy luxuries. He was in a saddle, leading men. He did die because he was betrayed, but it was to an enemy who knew the sheath protected him. The enemy sent in a medieval Mata Hari, who stole the sheath. When Arthur was wounded in battle, he couldn’t heal.”

He shrugged, but you could still see the pain on his face. He’d loved his adopted son and still missed him.

“I’d just returned to Faerie before this. I should have taken him with me, since he was too old to fight like he used to, but I didn’t, and I returned too late. He’d passed before I could get to him.” His voice had grown thick with emotion.

I felt a lump grow in my throat. How sad that Arthur had died alone, and his father hadn’t made it back to him in time.

Megan had been intent on the story. Once it ended, she hopped off Luke’s lap, and approached the enchanter. She reached into her pocket and brought out a magic ball. She whispered her ridiculous magic words, and her sword appeared. She set it on the table in front of Merlin. “Is this the sword?”

He looked up at her and turned back to examine the sword. He picked it up and looked closely at the blade, flipping it over. Nodding, he pointed at some words, his voice thick with emotion. “This says, ‘To my son, may he achieve his dreams.’”

Megan nodded. “My life rocks!” She pumped her fist and gave me a smile, her eyes sparkling. She’d been fighting and practicing with freaking Excalibur.

Merlin handed the sword back, and Megan collapsed it into a ball and shoved it into her pocket.
